Training and Advice to Agencies

C.O.P.E. provides an extensive menu of training, this is also available through our trading arm TLC2COPE which can conduct organisational learning needs assessments and develop bespoke packages of training to organisations and agencies who would pay for this service.

Developed by Livingworks Canada and introduced to Scotland by the Scottish Government ASIST can teach anyone to have the courage and confidence to recognise a person with suicidal thoughts and intentions and to intervene.

C.O.P.E. has trained several hundred people in ASIST from over 60 organisations and community groups as well as the general public.

Mental Health First Aid is the help given to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained.

It does not teach people to be therapists but how to recognise symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to guide a person towards professional help.

C.O.P.E. has trained several hundred people in SMHFA and over 40 organisations and community groups as well as the general public.

Recipe for the mind is a trainer for trainers course aimed at workers or carers supporting individuals experiencing mental health problems.

The course looks at the impact of diet and physical activity on mental health and provides workers with a tool to support the individuals they are working with to adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle. C.O.P.E. has trained over 80 workers in the Recipe for Life and a further two modules are planned focusing on children and families and individuals with substance misuse issues.

This course has been developed with sponsorship from Drumchapel LIFE.

The aim of this training is to support people to acquire the skills to deal with challenges which can affect their lives, this can include bereavement, illness, loss of employment, change in circumstances.

Stress management training is an integral part of resilience training as by its very nature life can be stressful stress management techniques can prevent this becoming distress as living a healthier lifestyle can help reduce background stress levels which can make an individual more resilient.

C.O.P.E. has been provided this training to 30 employees as part of workforce development as well as several hundred individuals a year as part of an overall package of care.

This intervention is particularly useful for supporting individuals to remain or return to employment while working through their issues.

As well as training provided to members of the management committee e.g. strategic planning, C.O.P.E. provide training and signpost to other training opportunities for individuals to acquire the skills for meaningful engagement with consultation processes.

This is very much led by need and in the past has include:

  • Participatory appraisal skills training.
  • Survey and mapping skills training.
  • Understanding the policy maze and strategic planning.
  • Practical discussions and information dissemination on documents which are out for consultation or may have an impact on individuals e.g. the Draft Joint Community Care Plan, how to contribute at focus events and other practical skills required if people are to feel they are able to make a contribution.

C.O.P.E. in the past year has supported in the region of 35 people in this area who went onto conduct surveys, act as mentors to other individuals, prepared feedback responses to consultation documents and attended other community engagement events.

  • Information on mental health in a variety of formats.
  • We have an independent Social Enterprise Firm TLC2COPE which trades in Training, Learning and Consultancy.

We have a variety of packs in written and auditory form on mental health issues e.g. Overcome Panic Attacks, Little Book Of Coping. Please contact us should you wish to purchase any of these materials.

We also produce at a glance guides and resource maps. The latest at a Glance Guide is the Project 42 map which is available for download and provides the services which can support individuals to return to employment.

The questions and the survey for this were conducted by local people following their training in participatory appraisal methods.
